An outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg infections linked to whole, fresh onions is being investigated by the FDA, CDC, and state and local partners.
As part of its traceback investigation, the FDA has identified two companies as suppliers of potentially contaminated whole, fresh onions imported from Mexico. These are ProSource Produce, LLC of Hailey, Idaho, and Keeler Family Farms of Deming, New Mexico.
As of July 1, 2021, ProSource Produce LLC has issued a voluntary recall of white, yellow, and red onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, that were imported between July 1, 2021, and August 31, 2021. Information about the recalled products can be found in ProSource Produce LLC’s recall announcement, and images of the products are posted on the FDA website.
Several restaurants where sick people reported eating onions from Chihuahua, Mexico reported using Keeler Family Farms as a common supplier. A voluntary recall of red, yellow, and white onions imported from the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, will take place between July 1, 2021, and August 31, 2021, according to the firm that met with FDA. Information regarding the recall will be provided as soon as it is available.
Onion varieties from ProSource Produce LLC and Keeler Family Farms that may be affected include jumbo, colossal, medium, summer, and sweet onions.
The onions purchased from Prosource were distributed in a variety of places throughout the United States, including restaurants, food service restaurants, and retail shops and grocery stores. There is an ongoing investigation to find out whether other products or firms are responsible for the illness. As more information becomes available, it will be released.
