Walmart announces largest ever grocery distribution center

The grocery retailer Walmart announced plans to build the largest grocery distribution center it has ever built.

In Spartanburg County, South Carolina, a fresh and frozen grocery store with 720,000 square feet will open in 2024. In addition to offering new technology-focused jobs in the region, Walmart says it will move twice the amount of product compared with a traditional DC.

“Walmart’s high-tech grocery distribution center will include game-changing innovations that are radically disrupting the supply chain, getting products onto shelves for our customers even faster, while saving time for our associates,” David Guggina, Walmart’s senior vice president of automation and innovation, said.

“We’re proud to be opening Walmart’s largest automated grocery distribution center in Spartanburg County and look forward to bringing new STEM job opportunities to the region.”

The retailer announced earlier this year that it would invest in a high-tech distribution center as part of a broader effort to automate as much of its supply chain as possible.

It has since added new innovative solutions that reduce handling costs and improve service to stores and customers at its first automated grocery distribution center, announced in 2018.

The retailer announced just months ago that it planned to automate more than half of its regional distribution centers and market fulfillment centers within select stores. As part of its last-mile delivery strategy, the retailer also invests in drones and autonomous vehicles.

“We’re thrilled to bring our high-tech grocery distribution center to the thriving logistics hub of Spartanburg County,” said Tim Cooper, senior vice president, supply chain operations at Walmart U.S.

“The new distribution center will be critical to ensuring our stores are stocked with the freshest grocery items to provide convenience and quality at everyday low prices to customers and communities in the state of South Carolina.”
