Each pod of edamame typically encloses two to three plump beans. The Edamame pods are a straight to slightly curved shape with pointed ends.
Additionally, the light green pods are wrapped in a fine layer of fuzz and are tightly sealed, creating a bumpy appearance where the pods cling to the silhouette of the bean.
The oval beans are revealed when the pods are opened, showing a smooth, pale green, and slippery surface in a non-overlapping pattern.
The beans develop a chewy, dense, and soft texture when they’re cooked (usually steamed or boiled).
Edamame has a sweet, nutty flavor with a slight grassy undertone. Only the beans are edible and the pods should be thrown away.
