Green Grapes

Green Grapes grow on a woody wine in clusters and are considered as a go to snack worldwide. Green grapes are medium in size, round to slightly oval in shape.

The skin of the green grape varies from yellow-green to bright green and is typically crisp, firm, and smooth. Its flesh is pale green and semi-translucent, with or without seeds (depending on the variety).

A green seeded/seedless grape is mild and sweet in flavor with a hint of tartness. (extent of tartness depends on the stage of ripening process of grape. the more yellowish green, the more sweeter the grape is).

Check freshness in Green Grapes

  • Ripe grapes will have light greenish, red or black color depending on the variety
  • Light green grapes have a brix (unit of measurement of sweetness) of 16-17. (for comparison, resins have a brix level of 24)
  • Green grapes having a slight yellow colored undertone have a brix level of 19-20 and hence are more sweeter
  • Green grapes having brown stem are old but still edible
  • Fresh harvested Green Grapes have green stem
  • Check the top of the grape where it is attached to the stem, it should not be cracked
  • Lifting the grape bunch and shaking it a little can be used to check the freshness of grapes. If few to no grapes fall from the bunch then it means that the grapes are fresh. Basically you are checking how firmly the grapes are attached to the stem
  • Remember when you select more sweeter yellowish green grapes, their shelf life will be less and they will shrink relatively sooner than green grapes
  • Avoid green grapes which have vinegary smell
  • Avoid green grapes with brown pits and cracks

How to store Green Grapes

  • Ripe green grapes can be stored at room temperature for 2-3 days if quality and texture is to be preserved
  • Ripe yellowish green grapes can be stored at room temperature for 1-2 days
  • Ripe grapes can be stored in the refrigerator for almost a week
  • Avoid washing the grapes before storing. Excess water might result in rotting or browning of grapes
  • Remove the grapes which have gone bad in the bunch or else they will ruin the other good grapes
  • Grapes can also be stored in freezer for 3-4 months
  • To store grapes in the freezer, freeze the grapes on a tray after removing the stem. Then, transfer it to an air tight freezer bag or container and store it in the freezer.
