Beetroot has a spherical to oval shape which tapers to a pointy tail at the bottom (non-stem end). Beets are edible underground roots. There are many varieties of beets and the color can range from red , purple, white and yellowish golden.
Beets can be consumed raw, cooked or pickled. There are a few tiny root hairs on the firm skin of a beet. The flesh of the beetroot is a deep crimson color, dense, aqueous and crunchy. Raw beet root tastes sweet and when cooked, beetroot turns soft and and tender. Beetroot leaves are also edible.
Diameter of a beetroot ranges from 5-7 cm (2-3 inches). Average weight of a medium sized beetroot is about 110 grams ( 4 ounces or 0.25 pounds).
