Chayote, though seems like a fruit, is a type of squash. Chayote is shaped like a pear and has a deep fold or indentation running vertically along the fruits skin( from stem end to flower end).

Chayote has a light green skin which is thin, firm and edible (but often discarded). The flesh of chayote is creamy white and has an edible seed at the center. Chayote flesh has slightly sweet taste with hint of cucumber flavor undertone. Chayote flesh is crunchy in texture.

Average length of chayote is around 7-10 cm ( 3-4 inches). Average weight of chayote 250 – 1000 gram (7-35 ounces or 0.6 – 2 pounds).
