Leaf Lettuce

The Green Leaf lettuce grows elongated and is narrow and small at the base, spreading out to a wider, curly top. It is medium to large in size. This lettuce is one of the most commonly planted lettuces in the world, and it is able to grow up to thirty centimetres in height.

Dozens of varieties of semi-frilled, loose-leaf lettuce are grouped together under the general term green leaf lettuce.

Branching out from the central stalk, the leaves are smooth, broad, curly and with many frills. The edges of the leaves are dark green. However, the colour transitions into a pale green or white in the lower half of the leaves near the juicy stalk.

A green leaf lettuce stalk can either smell sweet or bitter when scratched, depending on the variety. Leaf taste is also mildly sweet or semi-bitter, with bitterness occurring more frequently in mature leaves than young leaves.

After harvesting the outer leaves, the lettuce continues growing new leaves. Green Leaf lettuce can be used in a wide variety of ways by chefs and home cooks alike.

Folate, vitamins A, C, and K are all found in green leaf lettuce.
