Parwal / pointed gourd is a climbing vine that grows up to six meters in height and belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. Known for its digestibility and high nutritional value, parwal is very popular in India.
Parwal is small to medium-sized gourd, averaging 5-15 centimeters in length, with pointed ends and globose to oblong shapes. Initially yellow-green, the smooth rind becomes burnt orange as it matures, and may be completely solid or have some thin lines running along its length.
With a central cavity filled with slippery, small ivory seeds, the flesh is creamy white, moist, and has a firm texture. The soft texture and mild flavour of parwal make it ideal for absorbing flavours, and it can be cooked in a variety of ways.
In addition to vitamins A and C, potassium, magnesium, copper, and fiber, parwal / pointed gourd contains calcium, iron, and sulfur.
