Tomatillos, which mean “little tomatoes,” have a papery outer husk. Closely related to tomatoes, tomatillos are also known as “husk tomatoes“. Tomatillos are 1-2 inches in size.

Its slightly sticky husk surrounds a green, firm fruit, which dries to a light brown color as it matures, then splits open as the husk begins to dry.

Tomatillos also come in different colours such as green, yellow and purple. Tomatillos are harvested in their immature stage.

Despite being closely related to tomato, tomatillo is quite different in terms of taste. Tomatillos have a very tart flavour.

As they contain unique phytochemicals and flavonoids, tomatillos are higher in minerals than tomatoes. In addition to their fibre contents, tomatillos are rich in vitamins C, A, K, potassium, manganese, niacin and magnesium.

Several studies have directly linked the unique antioxidant phytochemicals in tomatillos called withanolides to anticancer and antibacterial properties.
