Today, truckers in Bangladesh are enforcing their strike. Containers and bulk cargoes are no longer being handled by the country’s seaports and river ports due to the 72 hour strike. Consequently, exporters and importers have expressed concern about possible congestion.
There was a slowdown in loading and unloading of containers from vessels at the Chittagong port jetties due to the strike. Three days of strike were called by the Bangladesh Covered Van-Truck-Prime Movers Goods Transportation Owners Association and the Bangladesh Truck Drivers Workers Federation.
According to Zafar Alam, general secretary of Bangladesh Covered Van-Truck-Prime Movers Goods Transportation Owners Association, the strike will continue until their demands are met. They have asked to amend the Road Transport Act 2018, withdraw the increased income tax on vehicle owners, stop extortion and harassment by police, provide heavy driving licenses easily, and fix the same weighing volume countrywide.
