New Zealand: Free Trade Agreement signed with UK for apple and pear trade

The New Zealand Apples and Pears Industry Association (NZAPI), which represents the country’s apple, pear and Nashi growers, applauds the Free Trade Agreement with the United Kingdom. The announcement of the signing of the agreement came from the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, and Trade Minister, Damien O’Connor.

“We congratulate Minister O’Connor and the MFAT negotiating team for achieving this outstanding outcome”, NZAPI chief executive Alan Pollard said.

“The United Kingdom is a very important market for our apples and pears, regularly featuring in the top two or three markets by volume. Having a comprehensive FTA and the phasing out of tariffs will ensure that our New Zealand growers will be able to continue to provide UK consumers with the opportunity to experience the unique taste and quality of New Zealand apples and pears in a more welcoming trade setting.”

As a result of the agreement, the tariff on pears will be eliminated on the date that the agreement goes into effect, and the tariff on apples will be eliminated for the season ranging from August to December , for 3 years.
