Bangladesh: Truckers call an end to their strike at Chittagong port

The truckers at Chittagong port have ended their strike as the Bangladesh government has given as assurance to fulfill a part of their demands. Some demands will be met immediately and some in the coming time.

On 22 September, truck and covered van owners and workers met Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at his office in Dhaka, where the minister, police chief, and administration high officials agreed with their demands.

Mokbul Ahmad, president of Bangladesh’s covered van-truck-prime movers goods transportation owners association, and Md Monir, president of Bangladesh’s truck drivers workers union, both expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting.

Ahmad confirmed that the strike has been withdrawn.

In the morning of 21 September, the owners and drivers began enforcing the 72-hour strike on 15 point demands. Transport of all kinds of goods across the country was halted, while loading and unloading at ports also ceased.

Officials from the port confirmed that goods transportation was gradually resuming.

Saif Maritime Limited CEO Mohammed Abdullah Jahir explained: “Due to the truck strike some vessels could not make scheduled sail today in the absence of outbound container supply,”.
