France: Plastic packaging for Banned for fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables will only be able to be sold without plastic packaging in the Hexagon starting in January 2022. It is the French government’s goal to reduce wasteful plastic packaging.

The regulation initially affects 30 different varieties. In addition to potatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, carrots, leeks, zucchini, and cauliflower, there is a wide variety of other vegetables. Fruit includes apples, pears, oranges, and tangerines.

In France, approximately 37% of vegetables and fruits are presently sold in packages, according to the responsible ministries. It is hoped that this new regulation will reduce save a billion plastic packaging per year.

There will still be time to sell remaining stocks packed in plastic six months after the new law takes effect. As time goes on, the ban will apply to more and more products until it will affect the entire O + G range by 2026.
