India: Legislation for good quality cattle feed by Kerala Government

In a recent interview, Minister for Animal Husbandry & Dairy Development Mrs J Chinchurani said Kerala is planning to enact laws to ensure cattle feed in the state is of good quality.

At the launch of the Milma Gomathi Gold Cattle Feed gift coupon scheme, which provides dairy farmers with benefits worth more than 3 crore rupees, at Milma Bhavan , as part of the government’s plan, the Ministry will come up with a project to produce ingredients for cattle feed in the state, which will insure a high quality of cattle feed at an affordable price for dairy farmers. During the next Assembly session, Mrs. Chinchurani said that the proposal would be introduced.

Mrs Chinchurani stated, “Through the proposed Bill, we are planning to implement a quality control regime to ensure the standard of cattle feed and supply of it to farmers,”

“The frequent rise in prices of cattle feed is a burden on farmers. We are unable to produce sufficient quantity of cattle feed here due to non-availability of ingredients. Now the government is looking into the possibilities of producing the ingredients within the state itself to address the issue,” the Minister added.

“We have to reduce the input cost to attract more farmers to dairy sector. Also, more projects aimed at the welfare of farmers need to be drawn up,” she continued.

K S Mani, Chairman of Milma, received the model gift coupon from the Minister.

In his inaugural address, Mani said Milma’s gift coupon program was launched to provide assistance to struggling farmers while reducing production costs.

The gathering was welcomed by Milma’s Managing Director Dr Patil Suyog Subhash Rao. The vote of thanks was proposed by Sri N Bhasurangan, Convener, Administrative Committee, Thiruvananthapuram Co-operative Milk Producers Union (TRCMPU).

A number of dairy development department officials as well as the Chairman of the Ernakulam Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union, John Theruvath, were present.

The event was also attended by Milma board members and local union office-bearers.  The Milk cooperatives and dairy farmers throughout the state were able to watch the function live on Facebook.

Dairy farmers are entitled to a free gift coupon worth INR 250 with each sack of Milma Golden cattle feed, which can be used for purchasing Milma milk products and Milmamin mineral mixture. The program plans to sell milma products and milmamin worth more than Rs 3 crore through milk cooperative societies across Kerala.

A 500 INR coupon will be given on an order of 50 bags of Gomathi Gold cattle feed. For a maximum order of 350 bags, coupons worth INR 8000 will be distributed.

In each district, milk cooperatives that secure from the first to fifth spots will be awarded INR 15,000 (first prize), INR 10,000 (second prize), INR 9,000 (third prize), INR 5,000 (fourth prize), and INR 4,000 (fifth prize).

Between 1 October and 31 December 2021, the gift coupon scheme will be available. Milk farmers can take advantage of their coupons until 28 February 2022 to purchase Milma products or Milmamin.

The BIS Type 2 quality feed Milka Gomathi Gold has a high content of minerals required for a high milk yield. Moreover, it contains five types of oil cakes that make digestion easy.

A series of quality control tests has been conducted at Milma’s new plants, located at Thuravur and Malampuzha.
