Retailers and distributors in the district are again seeing the price of tomatoes increase in wholesale and retail markets within weeks of farmers dumping their tomatoes due to unfavourable pricing. A kilogram of tomatoes costs between Rs20 and Rs35 in retail markets. On Wednesday, wholesale prices were Rs14-25 per kg at Gultekdi’s Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC). Tomato prices rose for the first time in more than six months.
Market Yard official Datta Kalamkar said on Wednesday that the supply and demand equation is not balanced. “We expect to see a further increase, at least over the next few days. The fresh harvest will not arrive soon,”
According to one official, restaurants and food companies are running at full capacity due to the good demand for tomatoes. “Household consumption is lower than commercial requirements. But tomatoes have good demand in the food industry; the prices will remain high range till the fresh harvest arrives in bulk,” a representative of APMC said.
