Indian Gooseberry / Amla

Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is the subtropical fruit of a tree of the same name native to India. In addition to being used in a variety of food preparations, the marble-like berries are also revered in Ayurvedic medicine.

The amla fruit is rich in antioxidants. The Indian gooseberry contains 20 times as much vitamin C as an orange.

Amlas have light-green skin and are small, round berries. The skin of the Amla is almost translucent, with six to eight faint yellow striations, which give the appearance of segmentation.

With a tough, yet thin skin, the flesh is crisp and juicy and has a sour and bitter taste. There is a hexagonal-shaped stone with segmented ridges in the center of the berry.
