In the Netherlands, Brussels sprouts and kale are in season. “Kale’s sales are doing particularly well. People are looking forward to this product again. We have already run several promotions with supermarkets which have gone well. The export also got off to a good start, ” stated Mike Glass from Glas-Groenten, Netherlands.
“The kale’s growth lagged, as did many other vegetables. There are far fewer lot kilos coming off one hectare. But the kale’s quality is excellent this year.”
The media began promoting kale as a superfood a few years ago. However, according to Mike, that hype has dwindled.
“Fortunately, sales are going well, and prices are satisfactory.”
It is still too soon to begin selling Brussels sprouts. “But this is no different from September in other years. When the weather gets a little colder, this will happen naturally. In addition, the yield per hectare for cabbage is much lower,” reveals Mike. “This provides fairly stable prices, especially in day trading.”
DEEN usually gets kale and Brussels sprouts from Glas-Groenten. Now three other supermarkets own this North Holland supermarket chain. Their new name is being put to use at the first stores. Mike explains, “For us, that’s a significant loss. But where doors close, others open elsewhere. Everything will work out fine in the end.”
