Peru: Avocado exports turnover almost $1 billion

Roberto Sanchez, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, said avocado exports reached $949 million in July 2021.

In comparison to the same period last year ($645 million), sales are 47 per cent higher, and they are 14 per cent higher compared to the full year last year, a previous record of $834 million. August, when the season ended, is not included in this figure.

Several factors contributed to the progress, according to Sanchez, including more investments to increase production and exports, and lower overseas export prices.

Sanchez  stated “I want to salute the hard work of the country’s farmers, cooperatives, associations and businessmen who have made the Peruvian avocado a product recognized worldwide for its quality,”.

“In our management, we will support their efforts with more training and technical assistance within the framework of regional export plans, so that together we can make Peru become the first supplier in the world.”

There were major exports to the EU with $469 million, the U.S. with $159 million, and Chile with $109 million. Additionally, South Korea stands out with its increased avocado imports of almost four times from $8 million to $30 million.
