Philippines: Tomatoes rot in the market because of lack of buyers

Many tons of tomatoes harvested around the town of Tinoc in Ifugao province went to waste because they couldn’t find buyers. The no vaccine-no entry rule at checkpoints is keeping buyers from reaching the markets, said Domingo Mariano, a Tinoc municipal agriculturist.

A farmer reported that she had to take back at least two tons of unsold tomatoes from the Nueva Vizcaya Agricultural Terminal since she had no buyers.

Almost six tons of tomatoes were rotting and taken away by farmers as cattle feed, according to a local trader.

The Department of Agriculture-Cordillera has been ordered by the Agriculture Secretary William Dar to investigate the matter. He also directed local governments to find buyers and dispatch trucks to deliver tomatoes to markets.
