Russia: Apple production to double in Moscow region (RF)

This year’s crop of apples may be more than double what was harvested last year in Moscow region (RF).

Throughout September, the Moscow region experiences a massive apple harvest. This trend continues year after year. An estimated 60% of Moscow’s apple crop is grown in the agro-industrial complex “Nepetsino”, CJSC “Sovkhoz Lenin “, FGBNU FNTs “Gardening “, and Shulgino. To date, about 200 tons of apples have been harvested in the Moscow Region, according to Minister of Agriculture and Food Sergei Voskresensky.

The Moscow region’s main apple producing areas are the Leninsky and Kolomensky urban districts, according to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.

About 400 hectares of apple orchards are located in the region. Here are grown varieties such as Antonovka, Melba, Bely Naliv, Mantet, Shtrifel, Orlik, Macintosh, Rozhdestvenskoye and many others. As a result of the favourable weather this year, it is expected that apple farms will harvest more apples this year than previously. Approximately two times more apples are expected to be harvested this year.

“We are planning to lay new orchards in the region, which will increase the yield and increase the production of marketable apples in the Moscow region,” said Sergei Voskresensky.

In 2020, more than 124.4 tons of apples were produced in the Moscow region, according to the minister.
