From 2023, Spanish retailers will no longer be allowed to sell fruit and vegetables in plastic containers and will be required to sell beverages in reusable containers.
As part of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge’s regulation of packaging and waste, by 2023, plastic containers will no longer be allowed to be used to package fruits and vegetables, and all beverages will be sold in recyclable containers.
Large retailers must offer up to seven different types of packaging and set aside a portion of their space for bulk sales, so that consumers can store goods in their own bags or containers, including bottles.
The measures focused on reusing packaging and recycling will primarily affect consumers in Spain in these two areas. Retailers will have to set up zones and inventory to meet these demands in addition to changing recycling methods, while manufacturers will have to increase recycled plastic content.
From 2023, supermarkets will use less and less plastic, based on the proposed decree.
