Taiwan will file a complaint with the WTO mid-October regarding China’s import ban on three types of Taiwan fruit. Chinese authorities banned the import of pineapples from Taiwan in March and announced a ban on wax apples and sugar apples from Taiwan on September 19.
Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture (COA) has asked China to provide evidence that “bugs” have been found in their Taiwanese shipments, but no response has been received. Thus, Taiwan will pursue its case in the WTO dispute resolution panel, where a peer review may be conducted in November.
In addition, it was noted that fruit exports to Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia were more direct, and that refrigerated pineapples and sugar apples were also welcomed in Japan. Taiwan’s COA stated it would pursue discussions with other countries to increase exports of its quality management and disease control systems.
