Thailand: Rise in vegetable prices due to low yield

It is a busy time for Thai wet markets as Thais of Chinese origin prepare for the vegetarian festival from October 6-14. A recent flood has resulted in lower yields for vegetables, which has driven up prices.

Despite the high demand for vegetables causes high prices during this time of year, Phuket’s Public Market 2 merchants said heavy rains and flooding, particularly in the central area where crops grow, are responsible for the 30% price hike.

There was a price increase of 70 baht per kilogram for Chinese kale in this market. A kilogram of water spinach will be sold for 50 baht instead of the usual 20 baht.

Bean sprouts, tofu, textured vegetable protein, and meat substitutes remain at the same prices as other festival staples.Wet markets gained customers, but their numbers are relatively low when compared to last year because of the pandemic.
