Ukraine: 45% increase in walnut export

Ukraine is forecast to export 108 thousand tons of walnuts during the 2021/22 marketing year, an increase of 45% over the previous season.

An article published by AgroPortal discusses this in reference to a report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

From October through May, walnut exports are typically active.

COVID-19 caused a drop in global demand for Ukrainian walnut exporters in the previous season, according to industry sources. According to the Statistical Bureau, exports are estimated at 74 thousand tons at the end of the 2020/2021 marketing year. That is a decrease of 29% compared to the 105 thousand tons exported in the 2019/2020 marketing year.

This year’s domestic walnut consumption will be 31 thousand tons, which is 6% less than last season.

A significant increase of 1.6 times occurred in the consumption of nuts by Ukrainians themselves in 2020/21 MY.

The review says walnuts are not staple foods in Ukraine, so their consumption fluctuates according to household incomes.
