The price of greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine began to decline following a significant increase last week. The price decline was somewhat expected, given the constant increase in supply of second-turnover cucumbers on the market, while the demand remains relatively weak.
At the end of this workweek, greenhouses were selling cucumbers for 15-30 UAH/kg ($0.38-0.56), which was 35% cheaper than the end of the last week.
Due to the weakening demand for greenhouse cucumbers, growers have had to cut prices. Because of extremely low retail sales rates, most retail chains and wholesale companies buy greenhouse cucumbers in small quantities. Despite a notable decline in competition with open-field cucumbers, greenhouse cucumber growers were unable to avoid the price decline.
In Ukraine, the price of greenhouse cucumbers is already 16% lower than in mid-September 2020. The new supply of cucumbers on the market is causing some growers to anticipate further price reductions in this segment.
