Switzerland: 110 million Swiss francs worth damage done by hail

A total of approximately 14,000 claims notifications were submitted to Schweizerische Hagel-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft, Genossenschaft (Schweizer Hagel) in 2021. According to this statistic, almost half of all insured persons have reported a loss.

The insurance company reported that the year 2021 had a significant number of large hailstones (up to 6 cm in diameter), especially in the middle of June and at the end of July.

This resulted in the destruction of many cultures. More than 110 million swiss francs in insured crop damage is expected, which is well above the current income from two annual premiums.

In its 141-year history, 2021 will be remembered as the worst year for Swiss hail. In some cases, heavy rain and storms accompanied the hail. Switzerland’s Central Plateau, the Jura region, and portions of the Central Plateau were hardest hit.

Damage (hail, storms, floods, outgrowth of grain, Spring freeze, and destruction of an array of crops) has been reported this year for arable crops, vegetables, ornamental plants, tree nursery crops, tobacco, vines, fruit, and pastures for pastures.

Nonetheless, this past year has once again demonstrated the frequency of extreme events and the necessity of conducting regular risk management. A combination of fluctuation reserves and reinsurance keeps Swiss farmers prepared for extreme weather. In addition to processing and paying out this year’s extremely high claims volume before the end of the year, the heavy workload will also be dealt with according to the usual framework.
