Chile: Expected rise in cheery exports to the US

According to Chilean industry leaders, cherry exports to the U.S. are expected to grow substantially in 2021-22.

This will be the first cherry season lasting more than 12 weeks, from November through February, with the Chilean Cherry Committee estimating that nearly 13,000 tons will be exported to the United States.

USDA data revealed the U.S. imported 6800 metric tons of Chilean cherries for the 2020-21 season.
Chilean cherries have mainly been exported to China, however, the industry is working diligently to develop other markets, including the United States.

“Diversification and development of markets is crucial for our industry,” Cristián Tagle, chairman of the Cherry Committee, said in the release. “Chile views the U.S. as a market with enormous potential, and we are committed to investing in its expansion.”

As part of the increased volume, the committee says it will fund an expanded marketing program, including consumer and retail components that encourage consumers to “Cherish the Moment.”

New merchandising material will highlight different occasions on which Chilean cherries can be enjoyed starting in December and running through February, according to the release.

“Chilean cherries are a delicious addition to just about anything,” said Karen Brux, managing director of Chilean Fresh Fruit Association.

“Whether shared with family over the holidays, used in a special dessert for Valentine’s Day, given as a gift for Chinese New Year, or just eaten on the sofa while watching TV … there are so many ways to ‘Cherrish the Moment’ with Chilean cherries.”

To promote cherries to customers both in-store and online, CFFA’s merchandisers work with retailers across the country. Additional boosts to awareness and shopper demand will be provided by E-commerce and social media initiatives.

Beginning in early November, Chile’s first cherry shipments will depart and will continue until early February.
